Brrrrrrrr! This post is cold!

Image
Gotcha? Yes! No? I don't know. Well this blog post is going to get your brain frozen! Not literally, can we just chill and read on? Get it? Never mind. Before we chill and that, check the first and second blog posts first if you haven't already. If you have, read on. Everyone should know Antarctica, also known as the South Pole, is the world's coldest continent, there are no polar bears, just penguins, whales, birds, fish and seals. In fact, it's so cold that it doesn't rain! This is due to the cold temperature so there is little moisture in Antarctica. Even with water, the ice is so dry it's classified as a desert, it's even dryer than the world hottest desert, the Sahara. At night, you might know Aurora Borealis, this happens due to charged particles during a solar flare, they collide with the Earth's magnetic field. As they collide they make countless bursts of light, called photons, and that's an Aurora Borealis. This proves that the

The study of Aotearoa.

Wake up, it's the second day of Aotearoa! Jokes, you know, this post and the previous blog post are in the Summer Learning Journey, sorry for not explaining from before. If you're wondering 'What's the Summer Learning Journey?', it's basically a competition to reach the most points by... blogging of course! There are prizes for the winners, that's all for now. Let's move on to the 'second' day. You probably all know New Zealand consists of two main islands, the North and South. Approximately 77% of the New Zealand population live in the North Island. Most of us in the North Island (me, Summer Learning Journey, friends & family) live in Auckland, though it seems Auckland is the biggest city in NZ, Wellington is the main capital of the country. Auckland is a great, wonderful places that's actually full of diverse structures, you might see trees near houses and city structures. It's also got cinemas, cafes, museums, and m

Day 1 of Aotearoa.

Tena koutou iwi, you want to hear the story of the birth of Aotearoa? Maui's hook reeling in the North Island. In Māori mythology, it's said much of Aotearoa New Zealand was formed when a powerful demigod, Maui, fished it out of the sea. Legend has it that Māui created a magical fish hook from the jawbone of his grandmother. And that one day he took his hook, boarded a boat, and rode out into the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Once at sea, he threw his magical hook into the water and caught a fish. This 'fish' was actually the North Island of New Zealand! Pretty shocking, right? In honour of this legend, the North Island of New Zealand is sometimes referred to as Te Ika a Māui or 'Māui’s fish' and the South Island of New Zealand is sometimes referred to as Te Waka a Māui or 'Māui's canoe'. I know this isn't the true story of Aotearoa, but it's pretty interesting, right? Well, it's time for facts! If you hadn't known what

About Mexico!

Image
Hola amigos! I am going to talk about Mexico! I decided to choose to talk about Mexico because I'm 27% Spanish, or at least I think so. I also chose it because I know that Mexico was once colonised by Spain, same thing happened to my country, Philippines, but it's todo bien now (all good). Okay, let's talk about Mexico now. Mexico is located below USA, in North America. The climates are extremely diverse, the more northern parts of Mexico are usually cold and dry, while the southern parts of Mexico are more warm and tropical. All four seasons exist in Mexico, from June to October, which is from summer to fall, hurricanes are pretty common in Mexico, so watch out... There are around 119.5 million people in Mexico, but the population is changing so there's no really telling how many people live in the moment. You might think that Spanish is Mexico's official language, but it's not, although it's a widely spoken language in Mexico. Most people would

Technology Challenge

Image
Hello guys! It's Term 4 now. ... last term we faced a challenge, the aim of challenge was to make a 'car'  in a group, out of these materials: An empty bottle of milk One skewer 4 straws (2 big, 2 small) And 4 bottle caps ... also you can use drills, tape, hot glue and scissors, then see which car travelled the longest when let go on a ramp. Me, Ishaan , Tyson , and Nikhil were a group. At first, it was hard to agree on how to make the car. I had a brilliant idea, it's only little. But I thought that it was a great idea. So I told my other team members. They said it was a GREAT idea, I was happy. So we stick the straw with duck tape, it was Mr R's (My teacher) one, someone told us to ask Mr R but my other team members didn't agree. So I followed along with them. Then Mr R came along and told us to ask him first, 'I told you guys!' said the person who told us earlier. Ishaan made a final decision of putting two wheels close together, it wa

Athletics!

Image
😄 Hi there. At this term we had the annual Athletics Day at the 2nd of November, it's part of our school curriculum. Also everyone is involved, including me! In Athletics Day, we move in rotations, categorised in Year groups. We could get points for our age and house groups, not those houses, I'll talk about what they are later.  There are loads of activities in Athletics, some are f u n , like fun throw, in my opinion. While some are boring . But that's not important, I'm just saying there are activities you rotate to, then eventually you'll come across most of them. I'm in the 10/11 year old boys, I'm 11, well, I turned 11.  The 400 metre run. Spoiler, not the 10-11 year old boys. The first thing we came across was the 400 metre run, I wasn't really sure if I was going to win. The 400 metre run is a running competition, there's a race track that continues straight forward, until it has curve, and also a cone. You HAVE to run around

Writing Tumble

Hi guys! Welcome to writing, my favourite subject! At the first week of this term, I wrote 2 descriptions and 1 story in a slideshow. We call it a writing tumble. In this writing tumble we basically describe the picture on the page. There are 5 pictures to write about. But you only have to write at least 3. You could pick a picture of your own but I don't think Waitemata did it. I didn't. Also they have titles. So to make a good writing and I try to do the most, make sure the writing is relevant. My favourite writing is the story because for me, writing stories isn't hard. My favourite writing is 'Invertebrate Calamity' because it's a story. I like writing stories. ...So my bet next time is to make it more it relevant to nature. The punctuation seems good to me and I organised it into paragraphs though. But otherwise it's really good. I have my other two writings, which are descriptions, the one called 'Mind on ruins' is my 2nd favourite, I tw

Don't come in yet, we're shooting!

I'm joking, come in. In this blog... A so-called 'Film Festival' was coming up, ignore that it already went. So we as Waikowhai Primary, made a video with 4 people, our group had Aniya , as our camera-woman, and me and Zion , with Walid . The theme was change, it didn't say what type of genre of change was it, so had varied options, change of attitude, whatever thing you'd like. Our one was about a robot that once did something to itself, and the scientist had to fix it. At first, I didn't think that my group could make a good film, but actually, it turned out to a blast! The video has to be no more than 3 minutes, very short actually, and kind of hard to deal with. But here it is, our film.

NED-er give up

Image
Do You Give Up? ...well, I do. But this blog post is not about giving up over and over. This blog post is going to be about NOT giving up.  Going back in time to the first weeks of Term 3, the NED show grabs the attention of every kid in the school. It was a bit funny, and had the olden day toys... yo-yo's! That's right, yo-yo's. But let's not jump into conclusion that quick. They talked how kids can change the world. Kids are the future when they grow up. Her are some pictures.

You want to be Internet Awesome?

Image
Hey guys!! You want to be Internet Awesome? Well, Google made this game called Interland. There are different islands with different objectives to be... Internet Awesome! I made a poster in Cybersmart at school about the different islands. Each island says a message, and it has a meaning. The poster just need a description of the message and your reflection about your game play. Here it is. I like mine because of the fonts. :)

The FINAL week of technology

Image
Hey guys! In the first week of technology , we had materials to make a marble go as far away from the table. In the second week  we had conductors and insulators to create circuits. In this one, I made a geoboard.  The first thing to do was to cut the strips of wood to even squares with saws. We did this in groups. Once done, we moved on to the measuring and drawing. With pencil, we draw a spot. Every spot  has to be 2 centimetres away from the edge, and 2 centimetres apart, horizontally and vertically. Then we used a hammer, or a piece of wood to get nails down. I couldn't finish it in time. But a teacher Mr Kim kindly finished off the nails for me. I didn't do this one, but you get rubber bands and make anything of it. It was a painful task, especially with nails.  A weird pattern, but at least it's a pattern right? Some nails seem a bit odd, don't know what happened to it.

The second week of Technology

Image
Hello there! In the previous blog post , it was in my class and we had materials and build something get a marble in level of the table and as far away from the table as you can. In this one, I will talk about the second week. It was about circuits, and electricity. I'll tell you what I did, and it didn't go very well... My class first went in a circle with Mr Riceman ( Manukau's teacher). He asked us about what electricity reminds us of. You don't really need to know about it. So let's jump into the circuit activity; I had an LED light, a LED battery, and a card. Then I took some paper clips, and things called ' split pins'. And it's pretty much what it is, you can split it in two so it's longer. I tried making a circuit with paper clips and split pins, but it didn't work. I tried harder and harder and kept questioning myself, 'Why is this not working?'. I looked around, and the circuits were amazing, there were even switch

The first week of Technology

Image
Hey guys! In this blog post, we had a 'Technology Rotation'. What is the Technology Rotation, you ask? Well, we just move from one class to another. First, we have Technology Rotation in my class, Waitemata. We had to do a 'Technology Challenge'. We have to make group of 3. The objective of this activity is to use materials and get a marble as far away from the table as you can, while it is in level with the table. The materials are straws, one plastic cup, a card, scissors, 2 metres of tape (We can cut it in half so we get 2 metres), yarn, and a marble. We were supposed to have toothpicks but my group managed to survive without it. I'll tell you how it went; Me, Ishaan , and Tyson  were just making a plan, I was thinking of cutting a hole in the plastic cup but my group no. Then we got it, kind of. Tyson put a material down on the table, but Ishaan said no (I can't really remember what happened). So we got ice block sticks, and fastened it with some ta

The Aggressive Race

Hey guys! In this blog post I made a an stop motion animation. It's called 'The Aggressive Race'. It's like what it sounds. A race where everyone fights to race to the finish. With play dough, I made this animation. First, I made the start line, with only whiteboard marker. It took while to finish. Then, I made the 5 characters, with special abilities and unique shapes. You might see the characters right now. Next time I'm going to add some more characters to make it a bit interesting. I will also take smaller steps, capture the characters one by one. And I will try a bit faster. Currently it's a work in progress. Here it is.

Improvements to Comments

Image
Hey guys! Today I made comment in the early afternoon. Now I'm improved it. I did add a positive, thoughtful, helpful comment. But I thought I should add some more detail on my thoughtful and helpful parts of the comment. It was clear and understandable, but it needed a tad more detail. I thought I needed more detail because I noticed it didn't have the reason why. The reason was the detail I needed. What I learned is that sometimes things need more detail to make it more clear. We picked a buddy (I had  Emelio ). Then we commented on their blog. I SMRF-ed (Stands for Stop, Make a copy, Rename, File) a Google Drawing. . I also added questions because it didn't have some. I also tweaked mistakes that don't exactly make sense. I was happy with both the orginal comment and the improved one. But the improved comment I was happier with because it explains I lot more. It was a pretty easy thing to do for me. I finished with more than enough time to blog this. So here it

Visual art, yep.

Image
Hey guys! So over the past few weeks, we have been making an abstract picture of an endemic animal for our art exhibition. And oh, you might ask, what endemic means? Endemic means that either a plant or animal is from a certain place, and is restricted in that place. And not anywhere else. Anyway, let's start with the process of the visual art.  Here are the materials you need : - Acrylic paint - Paint brushes  - A thick piece of paper - Pencil - Pen - Art book - Our device (chromebooks in this blog.) 1.The first thing we did was listing animals in our device, and more animals...  2. Then we chose an animal (Mine is a bluegill bully, the animal type is an eel) 3. Find 4 photos of your animal.  4. Choose one of the 4 photos for the 4th step and well, there you go! The decision-making steps are over. :D 5. And this is where the drawing and painting begins. We sketch some some pictures of our creature.  6.Choose one of your drawings (mayb

How to make a flood-proof house

Image
Hello there! From a few days before, we have been creating models of a flood-proof house. We used our prior knowledge and texts from of a book, called 'Building for the Future'. It was about a country, Samoa, had been massacred by typhoons and other disasters. So the chief, and some people who came to Samoa discussed about how they are going to survive more storms. After we made the model, we labelled and analysed it. Next time I want to cover the strips with short walls. I thought that Samoa was a nice, tropical island where they enjoy their life. But I realised that they experienced lots of storms.  We explained the purposes of features that the house has. Here is mine, there are labels for you to understand.  This is the house I made.

Persuasive writing

Image
Hey! Read this because it will have all you wished for! Just kidding, but over couple of weeks we have been working for a pink beanbag (The best you will ever have). We had to use persuasive writing to convince people to buy it (We are not selling for real.). Then we used Google Drawing to advertise the "most amazing beanbag". Here is mine.

ANZAC day

Image
Welcome back guys!  Today I'm going to tell things I learned and discussed about ANZAC day. At dawn a commemoration (com-mem-moh-RAY-shin) so-called "Dawn Parade" is to remind us about the soldiers that protected us from other countries and gave us our freedom. They have some buildings and gravestones called obelisks. The people who fought at war march together, some go in wheelchairs if they can't walk. In the Vietnam War, some people who fought in Vietnam got sick because of the chemicals used in the war. Some people are alive from World War 1 and World war 2 today, maybe your (great) grandparents fought at World War 1/2. ANZAC is the troops of the New Zealanders and Australians fighting together in Gallipoli, Turkey.  Credit: Toyca Tour Feel free to comment what you know or make an opinion about ANZAC day.

...

Hello. Why are you checking Karl's blog you naughty boy/girl? Oh, if you want to read Karl's blog, how about an answer to little riddle... 1.Most of the wonders and mysteries lie here. 2.I can feel the intense pressure anywhere. 3.It is a very dark, dangerous and cold place. 4.Things must depend on their own or/and other things around it. 5.It is an extensive place. 6. Lots of things that are impossible also lie here. JK! This week we are working on using descriptive language by sharing our writing straight onto our blog.  The challenge we have is to describe a place using only six sentences. After reading the description you need to guess the place that has been described. It would really help if you say what clues helped you come to this conclusion. Also, did you answer my riddle? Hmmm?

Reading - Seaweek!

Image
Hey there! For a couple of days in reading we have been looking at synthesising. We used our prior knowledge and the new knowledge to learn more facts, and how we can connect our prior and new knowledge. We watched videos about the ocean and read posters. This knowledge is going to be used later on. The facts were shocking. I learnt that reading is not just reading books. It's gaining and gathering information. From those videos I learnt that a such small animal, can change the ocean. They 'filter feed' the water making it crystal clear. I shared that knowledge in my reading class. Here is the site of the videos and the poster I made.

Te Tiriti o Waitangi

Image
Hey guys.  For a couple weeks we been discussing, questioning and answering about the history of the Waitangi Treaty. While reading throughout the story we had questions to answer. Most of them are easy. After we read the story we can remember what happened. Then we had to answer comprehension questions. Once we finished it, we gathered around, discussing the answers. Here a photo of the story and the link of my work of Waitangi day. What I really learnt about Waitangi day is that it was a day of debating and protesting. The link is here.

Learning Journey 2018

Image
Welcome back to 2018 guys! Today is a new fresh day of cybersmart. What we've been doing is creating a DLO (Digital Learning Object) to demand people reading them what you do to keep your device and yourself safe. We can use videos, slide animations, google drawings and more. We had to make the DLO message clever and easy to understand. We had to think of a topic to create about in the Kawa of Care document. Most chose keeping passwords safe. Also we had to make the images ourselves, it is a little trickier than getting images online but we don't want to create copyright. We had to finish this quite quickly, or we'll have to finish it in our time. Here's a little image of me to introduce myself. Now, here's my DLO I made.
